James Irvine was born in London in 1958. He graduated from the Royal College of Art, London, in 1984, and in the same year moved to Milan.
From 1984 to 1992 he worked as a consultant to Olivetti for product design under Michele de Lucchi and Ettore Sottsass.
In 1987, as part of a cultural exchange organized by Olivetti, he spent a year working at the Toshiba Design Centre in Tokyo.
In 1988 he opened his own studio in Milan. From 1993 to 1998, in addition to his private work, he was also a partner of the Sottsass Associati studio, with responsibility for industrial design.
In 1999 he completed the new bus project for the Üstra transport system in the city of Hanover, which involved the manufacture of 131 buses in collaboration with Mercedes Benz.
In 2004 he was guest of honor at the ‘Interieur’ fair in Kortrijk, and was also appointed RDI (Royal designer for Industry) by the Royal Society of Arts in London.

Through his Milan studio, he has collaborated and continues to collaborate with several internationally renowned companies, including Alfi, Artemide, Arabia, B&B Italia, Canon Japan, Coro, Duravit, Foscarini, Magis, Olivari, Plank, Thonet, Whirlpool and WMF.
